In 955 a king named Otto I of Eastern Europe was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. This is because he beat the Magyars in the Battle of Lechfeld since they did not believe in Christ. The pope was so pleased with this victory he gave Otto I this title.
After Otto all the German Kings were also called Holy Roman Emperor. This caused arguments between the popes and King because now the popes did not have as much power in the area. They also did not earn as much money as they did before this title was given.
