A man named Benedict, or Saint Benedict was the founder of the Benedict Rule. He was a monk from Nursia. When Saint Benedict was young he retired to a cave in the Sabine Hills so that he could "escape from the vice about him." In these hill Benedict lived like a hermit. After continuing this life for three years he had convinced himself that there was a better way to receive peace of mind. The Benedictine Rule made people vow three things, obedience, stability, and conversion in the way of life. The Monks were also told to be peaceful and pray a lot. The most important monastery of the Benedictine Rule was the one at Monte Cassino. This was located between Rome and Naples and soon became the capital of monasticism in the West.
